City of Jordan (Scott County) Bridge 70551

Bridge 70551, located on Rice Street in the City of Jordan, crosses over Sand Creek and consists of a 110 ft long, 3-span prestressed concrete beam structure. It has 2 lanes of traffic with a total deck width of 29 ft, and the deck contains a horizontal curve. The bridge includes a modified P-1 concrete railing with formliner, ornamental metal railing, and lighting. It has integral abutments, and concrete wall piers. Formliner was also utilized on abutments, wingwalls, and piers. Substructures are supported on steel H-piling. Due to the presence of shallow bedrock, the abutment and pier design utilized rock sockets. A cast-in-place concrete retaining wall supported on a spread footing extends from the northwest wingwall.

A restaurant adjacent to the north bridge abutment is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. To avoid detrimental impacts to the restaurant, the bridge design utilized pile installation methods that minimized vibration. The existing bridge was also listed as a historic structure. Therefore, coordination with SHPO was a very significant part of the design process. Immediately west of Bridge 70551 is a railroad bridge, and coordination with the railroad company was also an integral part of the project.
